Sasol Germany GmbH plans to invest up to €70 million in its Brunsbüttel chemical plant over the coming years. Construction of an ethylene pipeline to Stade taking place at the same time will link the location to the German pipeline network.
Sasol Germany’s investment plans cover the modernization and expansion of will modernise and expand its ethylene-based production facilities for fatty alcohols, the associated infrastructure and further processing plants. The building work should be completed by 2007.This investment volume demonstrates that the South African parent company has demonstrated it’s commitment to the Brunsbüttel location and to offering it a long-term perspective, Otto Pepler, manager of Sasol Germany informed the press in Kiel on 14 January 2004. Minister President Heide Simonis and Minister for the Economy Prof. Dr. Bernd Rohwer welcomed the decision as a new impetus for more growth and employment on the west coast and as a good sign for Schleswig-Holstein as an industrial location.

The Sasol pipeline will be built as a 6 inch pipe with a length of 54km and a throughput of around 430,000 tons of ethylene per year.
The planned pipeline to Stade is the first stage in the implementation of the ChemCoast project, whose main aim is to network raw material supplies for the North German petrochemical locations. The Sasol pipeline will be built as a 6 inch pipe with a length of 54km and a maximum throughput of around 430,000 tons of ethylene per year. One very interesting technical feature of the pipeline construction is its 3,000 metre crossing below the Elbe. The possibility of sinking the pipeline at both sides of the Elbe and joining them in the middle is being examined. The necessary technical processes are already available but they have never been used in this combination. The construction costs will be approximately 18 million. The pipeline should be ready for commissioning at the end of 2006/beginning of 2007. |
