In October 2003 the Lower Saxon Minister for the Economy, Walter Hirche, symbolically opened a new ethylene pipeline in the presence of Manfred Maas, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Economy in Saxony Anhalt, and Gunter Armonat, District Administrator of Stade rural district. The 390 km long pipeline will supply the subsidiary of the US chemical company - Buna Sow Leuna Olefinverbund GmbH BSL in Schkopau – with the raw material it needs to produce plastics.
The raw material, ethylene is delivered via the port facilities in Stade. The investment volume for the pipeline construction was more than 100 million. The commissioning of the pipeline did not just ensure supplies of the raw material, it was also an investment in Germany as a forward-looking industrial location. For Schkopau and Stade the construction of safe and secure transport routes for basic chemical materials forms the basis for further growth and consolidation of economic development in the regions.
The pipeline was constructed in keeping with Dow’s stringent safety standards. Ethylene is a chemically pure gas, which is delivered to Stade by ship from where it is transported to the saline storage facilities in Teutschenthal. From there the plastic production facilities in Schkopau are also supplied via pipelines. The plastics that are produced here are used in products such as car tyres, components for communication and electrical technology, building and packaging materials and also in the latest baby’s nappies.

Construction of the pipeline started in 2002. The major technical challenge was crossing below the Elbe-Seiten canal. The project included a landscape conservation plan. This ensures that the pipeline route is ecologically revitalised by replanting and other measures. 210km of the route are in Saxony Anhalt and 180km are in Lower Saxony. |
